Praise has been heaped on the BMW 320d since its European launch in November 1999. For the first time in motorsport history, a diesel-engined car won one of the world's most arduous endurance challenges. The car was, of course, the BMW 320d and the race was the infamous Nurburgring 24-Hour.

In comparative road tests by top motoring journals, the BMW 320d has repeatedly outperformed its rivals. It was named Car of the Year 2001 by the Guild of Motoring Journalists, and in 2002 the 330d broke the world diesel towing record, reaching a speed of 166km/h towing a Jurgens Fleetline caravan in celebration of Caravan and Outdoor Life magazine's 500th issue.
